Pot Luck #57 Texting

I have never sent a text message but have frequently been with people who were texting. I found reading the directions on this exercise to be very informative and think I could text in an emergency. I occasionally use some lingo in emails to close friends but I was especially pleased to see the site Lingo 2 Word. There have been times that I received abbreviated words that took some time to figure out and this site would have been very helpful.



I am appalled at people texting while they drive. With accidents sometimes unavoidable it is frightening to think that the person in the next large, speeding vehicle could be distracted with a small handheld phone and oblivious to the current road conditions.

30 Spring Cleaning

I have used the S drive before but I added a file and took it off. I went through the P drive and deleted some files. Working with the Z drive I do have a number of files but feel the size is within reason. I have always deleted some things as I went to keep the z drive to a manageable size. I do want to spend some more time to see whether I can delete more items. The remaining documents have the potential to be a tremendous time saver. When I write to the villages or write a memo it is great to have a previous document that can be updated. The earliest document I deleted was a building repair document from 1998. I don't remember where I found it but think it may have been in the P drive.

29 Spring Cleaning

I have had a personal email account for many years and have used it for personal email. On a few occasions I have received a personal email on the county account and I've either deleted it or deleted it as soon as I had forwarded it to my personal account to reply.

I have been deleting emails and empting the trash. I feel I have a ways to go yet but am pleased with my progress. I have begun to organized what is left.

For the county account I have very few addresses in my address book. Using Outlook the address appears when I type the first letter of the address. I can quickly look up those that I have not used before.

Everyday as I read emails I am deleting as many as possible as soon as I have read them. I am also looking back at the previous emails and trying to delete them as well. I don't see having such a collection of emails in the future.

28 Spring Cleaning

I am one of the people who has not been faithful in maintaining my email account. I was keeping current any emails that I thought I would use and sometimes keeping them beyond their usefulness. GTD has encouraged me to evaluate the emails received and to delete as much as possible. I've been doing massive weeding of my inbox and look forward to the next step of organizing the remaining emails.

I looked at the calendar sites and I find them interesting. I see that they answer a need for some people. I currently feel my paper system works for me.

Confession is good for the soul.

Week 10 #23 Is This Really the End?

My favorite discovery is the Blog. It is very rewarding to type something and to see it look polished. I also like having the blogline feeds and will use SirsiDynix. Many of the things I had been exposed to before but it was good to spend more time with them. I never would have been able to complete this set of exercises if I had not been able to do them from home. With two of the exercises I had help from other staff members.

It is very good that HCPL is encouraging staff to work on these but it may be a bit daunting to do so many steps in such a short time. Getting the public involved is a nice touch and perhaps we can use more involvement on the website.

Week 9 #22 Downloadable Media

Libri Vox has books in public domain and so has many classics. Wowio seems to be comics and Science Fiction. I went through the HCPL tutorial and spent some time browsing and adding titles to my cart. A number of titles I was interested in were new and there was a waiting list. Before downloading the media player I double checked the age of my old computer and realized that it is too old to support this service. I am disappointed not to be able to listen to some of these books from home. I have downloaded to an MP3 player in the past.

Week 9 #21 podcast

I went into Podcasts and Yahoo. The site that I was especially excited about adding was the SirsiDynix Institute site. I clicked the RSS and tried to add it but could not figure out how to do it. As I was about to give up I noticed I could type in the URL address in my blogline account and I got it to work. I'm especially excited about this site and expect to use it in the future. As this is my time off I even listened to a lecture while doing something else. Yea!
